Yang Chiu-hsing, magistrate of Kaohsiung, said yesterday he is considering turning the mudslide-destroyed village of Siaolin into a memorial park. I think we should keep Siaolin as a park in memory of those we believe were buried alive, said the magistrate of the southern Taiwan county, who opposes the rebuilding of the village. One reason for Yang's consideration to create the memorial park is that most of the residents do not want more excavation of tens of thousands of tons of mud to locate the approximately 200 people buried and presumed dead. They do not want heavy construction equipment crushing...

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Thursday spent considerable time deliberating the impact of less than normal monsoon and its possible effects on the economy and the food situation in the country. Despite the IMD predicting that July and August would see a recovery in the monsoon, fears were expressed that a repeat of last year a dip in July rains coming on the back of very weak June monsoon could be dangerous for the economy.

Loss of forests in India, China during the 1700s led to a decline in monsoon precipitation The dramatic expansion of agriculture in India and southeastern China during the 18th century a sprawl that took place at the expense of forests triggered a substantial drop in precipitation in those regions, a new study suggests. Winds that blow northeast from the Indian Ocean into southern Asia each summer bring abundant rain to an area thats home to more than half the worlds population. But those seasonal winds, known as monsoons, brought about 20 percent less rainfall each year to India...

GAUHATI, India - Teeming monsoon rains have inundated wide swaths of northern India and neighboring Bangladesh, killing at least 166 people and washing away villages and farmland that 19 million people depend on, officials said Thursday. With rain-swollen rivers bursting their banks along the fertile plains south of the Himalayas, India sent soldiers to help evacuate people from some of the worst-hit areas. "I have not seen such flooding in the last 24 years. It's a sheet of water everywhere," said Santosh Mishra, a resident of the Gonda district in Uttar Pradesh, one of the areas soldiers were sent. Authorities...

Ice ages dried up African monsoons 10:00 10 June 2007 NewScientist.com news service When ice ages held Europe in their grip, Africa also felt the pinch - though in a different way. It has long been suspected that there is a connection between the west African monsoon and climate at higher latitudes - especially over geological timescales, says David Lea at the University of California, Santa Barbara. "But until now, there hasn't been enough supporting evidence." Now Lea, with team leader Syee Weldeab and colleagues, has reconstructed the most detailed history of the monsoon yet, spanning 155,000 years and two...

Collapse of civilisations linked to monsoon changes 11:13 04 January 2007 NewScientist.com news service Catherine Brahic The downfall of the one of the greatest Chinese dynasties may have been catalysed by severe changes in climate. The same climate changes may have simultaneously led to the end of the Maya civilisation depicted in Mel Gibson's new film Apocalypto. So says Gerald Haug of the GeoForschungsZentrum in Germany and colleagues, who studied geological records of monsoons over the past 16,000 years. They have found a startling correlation between climate extremes and the fall of two great civilisations: the Tang dynasty in China...

3,000 dead and missing after N Korea floods Published: Thursday, 27 July, 2006, 01:16 PM Doha Time SEOUL: Nearly 3,000 North Koreans were believed dead or missing in floods and landslides after torrential rains hit the impoverished country, a respected South Korean human rights group said yesterday. Far north Queensland residents in cyclone Larry's path have been urged to evacuate as authorities compare the violent storm to Hurricane Katrina which devastated United States gulf states last year. Larry could intensify to a category five - the most intense rating for a cyclone - by the time it hits south of Cairns between Innisfail and Cardwell early tomorrow, the Bureau of Meteorology said today. Counter Disaster and Rescue Services (CDRS) executive director Frank Pagano said residents in low-lying beach communities along the stretch of coast in the cyclone's path should be "really considering" evacuating. Mr Pagano said mandatory...

A radio show stunt that sent an intern rafting in the flooded Santa Cruz River on Wednesday morning was "irresponsible" and "mocks" the safety message firefighters have been sending this summer, a Tucson Fire Department official said. While on the air with JohnJay and Rich on KRQQ, intern Randy Stein launched near El Camino del Cerro and managed to get out of the river before a police officer asked him to go home, DJ Rich Berra said. "It sends the wrong message," said Fire Capt. Paul McDonough. "We"ve had several drownings in wash-related accidents this year and this kind of...

HEAT WAVE: AFRICAN TROPICAL MONSOON IS SUFFOCATING EUROPE, SAYS CNR (AGI) - Rome, Italy, Aug. 6 - The unbearable heat wave that is hitting Italy and much of Europe is closely tied to the particular intensity of the African tropical monsoon season. "Heavy storms in sub-Saharan Africa cause a decrease in rains and intense heat in the Mediterranean, and in particular on the northern coasts. In other words, it's as if the desert climate were suddenly shifted towards us," said Giampiero Maracchi, director of the IBIMET-CNR. Since the end of June, the quantity of rain in sub-Saharan Africa has...
